Five Months Old

July 11, 2008

Today is Aidan's 5 month birthday, and as each month goes by, being a parent gets more fun and easier than the last.

Aidan seems to cry less often as each week goes by, and is growing much more independent.  We can set him down for longer periods of time and he will play and entertain himself.  We love his newest toy - it's a walker/entertainer in one.

The toys are all on a round base, and the little seat rotates around the base so Aidan can walk around and play with all of his toys.  When we first put him in the seat, he typically grabs for the toys and looks at them for awhile.  After a few minutes in the seat, he starts to walk around and look around the room.  Finally, he will put his head down and just walk around and around the base, jabbering away, until eventually he decides he's had enough and lets us know he's ready to get out!  This toy is a lifesaver for us, and we use it as a "diversion" while we make dinner or try to get a few things done.

Aidan gets to start eating "real" food now that he's five months old.  We did a trial run on Wednesday - I roasted a butternut squash and pureed it in our food processor.  We gave him just a little taste, and well, let's just say he didn't absolutely love it.  He pushed the squash in and out of his mouth with his tongue for a minute, not sure what to do with it, but not really making any facial expressions either.  Finally, he figured out how to swallow it, and kind of jolted like it gave him the chills.  We tried to feed him a little bit more, but he kept making that chills movement, so we stopped.  I have a feeling it's going to take him awhile for veggies to grow on him!

It's so fun to see him grow and discover new things everyday, and it's most fun to do whatever we can to make him laugh!  It's funny how we'll act like total goofballs to try to get him to giggle, but hey, whatever works!  We just love to see our little guy happy.
